Entrepreneurial spirit

This is what I found on our porch yesterday afternoon.
He made 3¢ from his guitar playing - a penny each from the girls and me.

Then the girls had to get in on this money-makin' gig.
So Kendra took out papers and markers and drew pictures to sell for a penny a piece.
Laura joined in the music section,
but she changed over to pictures after the first 30 seconds of music didn't pay well.
And Evan switched to drawing pictures and making paper airplanes.

At the end of the afternoon (they were out there for a bit over two hours),
Evan had made 52¢,
Kendra made 48¢,
and Laura made 45¢.

Not too bad for an afternoon on the porch in a small town.

Saving money and sexting

When our kids get money for their birthdays or Christmas from great grandparents, they save it. They each have a "loot bag", a little drawstring bag that holds their money. A couple of times a year, we take them shopping, and they can buy a toy for themselves if they so choose.

Kendra is our saver. She has spent very little of her money, ever. So, yesterday, she counted out her money, and she bought herself a Nintendo DSi. She only has 42¢ left, but she bought it all by herself. And it's pink. And she loves it.

Needless to say, today was spent nearly entirely playing with her DS and learning what all it can do. Taking pictures was a huge hit.

During lunch, the kids were at the dining room table eating, and I was in the kitchen doing something. Chad comes in and says to me very quietly, "So if there's facial recognition software, do they also have nudity recognition software so parents can prevent their kids from sexting?"

From the other room, Evan yells, "Prevent us from doing what?!"

Chad kept himself composed and said, "You need to get less-good hearing."

But I'm not sure if Evan could hear him over the sound of me laughing.

My apologies to the other 2nd grade parents if Evan did actually hear that word correctly.

I'll just save it up for later

Evan: I need to stop exercising so I have energy left for when I'm older.

Yes, we had a talk about "use it or lose it" after this statement was made.
