[As the girls are getting jammies on.]
Kendra: I like your mole, Laura.
Kendra: I like your mole, Laura.
Kendra: I like your mole, Laura.
Mommy: Which mole do you like?
Kendra: This one. And this one.
Mommy: Those aren't moles. Those are nipples. You have them too.
Kendra, examining: Oh. I like your nipples and mine, Laura.
Physiology
Today we went to the zoo. We watched the tortoises. As we walked back past the tortoises awhile later, we heard a strange, loud noise. The big male tortoise likes one of the smaller female tortoises. And was showing his affection for her quite effectively, complete with noises. So we got to talk about what the top tortoise was doing to the bottom tortoise. Quality learnin', I tell ya.

Breakfast
Mommy: Ok, lovebugs, what do you want for breakfast?
Kendra: Macaroni!
Mommy: No, you had macaroni and cheese for two meals yesterday. There's none for breakfast. What would you like for breakfast?
Kendra: Meatballs?
Evan: Tacos.
Mommy [laughing]: No! Breakfast, children. Breakfast! What do you want for breakfast?
Evan: Oh. Mommy cereal*.
Mommy: Ok. Is Mommy cereal ok with you Kendra? Laura is that ok with you?
Laura: No, I just want a hot dog.
Mommy [laughing again]: There's no hot dogs in breakfast!
*Mommy cereal is Frosted Mini Spooners. The kids started calling it that when Evan was younger since I was the one who ate that cereal. They now eat it more often than I do, but it's still called Mommy cereal. And it makes me smile!

Now that's plush
As I've mentioned, we're busy taking all the carpet out of the main floor of our house and moving our stuff out so the hardwood floors that were underneath can be refinished. (Which also means I'll be without a computer and most likely won't be blogging next week unless I'm really on top of things and preschedule a bunch of posts.) The carpet that was in the majority of the main floor was top of the line carpet. Granted, it was top of the line carpet 50 years ago, but still top of the line carpet. It was very soft, very thick, very avocado green and harvest gold, and very cushy. When we took out the not-so-cushy kitchen carpet, there was water-soluble glue underneath the vinyl that was under the carpet. We didn't get all of the glue up, so that means anywhere we drip water, we can then potentially stick to the floor. So, to help remedy a bit of this problem, we took big strips of the cushy livingroomdiningroomhallwayalcoveentryway carpet to set down in front of the kitchen sink and the fridge where the towel hangs. (Be patient. I'm going somewhere with this.)
Tonight, I was putting dishes in the dishwasher and there was one small open spot on the top rack and one larger open spot on the bottom rack. Too full for breakfast dishes to fit in there, but not quite full enough for me to run it without thinking twice (I'm very cheap and don't like running a not-full dishwasher). But I started the dishwasher anyway. Then I turn around and, lo and behold, there was a box of brownie mix on the counter, and it occured to me that the two open spots in the dishwasher were just the right size for a measuring cup and a mixing bowl. If I didn't think it was a form of blasphemy to say it, I might say something like it was divine providence or something of that sort. (Yes, I'm still going somewhere with this post.)
So, I quickly open the brownie mix, grab a mixing bowl and measuring cup, get an egg out of the fridge and set it on the counter which happened to be the last egg in the carton so I have to grab another carton. And as I'm grabbing that second egg out of the fridge, I hear an egg-sized thud behind me. In my rush to get brownies made so I could put the mixing bowl and measuring cup in the dishwasher, I had set the first egg on the edge of the counter. You know, the counter that has a nice gentle lip at the edge to keep eggs from rolling off. But I hadn't. I had set it on the stove. Not on a burner so the coils would keep it from rolling, but just on the stove. The stove that's a countertop one, so it has no lip around it. (Have you figured out where I'm going with this yet?)
I can't whip around to grab the egg that just went thud because I'm holding another open carton of eggs. I realize the thud didn't sound like a splat though, so it should be ok. Then I hear a bit of a thunk noise, a gentle rolling sound, and a wee bit of a crack.
After rolling off the stove to the floor, the egg rolled off the carpet strip onto the hardwood, and across the floor where it finally cracked ever so gently.
Do you remember where I started with this post long, long ago? Yes! The carpet! The top of the line carpet! So, this top of the line carpet, which also had a nice pad under it when it was properly installed in our house, is now sitting, without a pad, as a rug on our kitchen floor. Yet it's somehow still soft enough that it prevents an egg from so much as cracking when it rolls off the stove and all the way to the floor.
Now that's some cushy carpet!

Basic safety lesson
Yesterday afternoon Evan and Kendra were cutting pictures out of magazines and catalogs and gluing them on paper. After they'd been at it for about an hour and a half, Evan left for a bit. When he came back, I asked him where he'd gone. "I just wanted to go for a run with my scissors."
Sigh...

Comprehension
Tonight when I took Laura into her room for bedtime, she told me, "You need to put gate up, Mommy, so I don't get out my room." I'm so glad she understands!
Who are you again?
Evan: Can you get this Lego unstuck, Kendra.
Mommy: Yes, I can. But my name isn't Kendra.
Evan: I know. I just forgot what your name was.
Mommy: You forgot what my name was?!? You forgot my name?!? My name is Joe! How could you forget that? [Commence tickling and giggling.]
But really. He said he forgot what my name is. And not that he forgot the Lynnette part, but that he forgot the Mommy part. Nice.

The bedroom orphan
Last week, Kendra started sleeping in Laura's room. We have a sort of toddler bed trundle bed arrangement going. Since we took down the crib, we had an extra crib/toddler mattress hanging around. And since Laura hasn't been sleeping well and always wants someone in with her, we decided to see if it would work to have Kendra sleep in there. Kendra sleeps on the extra mattress on the floor, which gets easily tucked under the toddler bed when she gets up in the morning so they still have ample floor space to play. Anyway ... it hasn't helped Laura's sleeping problems, but Kendra loves sleeping in there (and Evan hasn't minded being alone in the way-upstairs) so we're sticking with it.
However, Kendra is now a bedroom orphan. She doesn't have a room to call her own. There were a few extra kids over here yesterday, and Evan was showing one of them his room. Kendra followed them up the stairs saying, "I sleep where Laura's sleeping. I used to sleep in Evan's room; I'll show you the bed where I used to sleep. But now I sleep in Laura's room."
She refers to the bedrooms as "Evan's room" and "Laura's room". But only once has she said anything about "Laura and Kendra's room" or "Kendra and Laura's room".
So, either she feels like neither one is her room. Or else she secretly knows they're both her room since she sleeps in one but her dresser is still in the other.

Boy shopping
I have 3 extra kids here playing this afternoon. Right now, they're playing house. The girls are going to go "girl shopping".
Me: Girl shopping? Does that mean you're going shopping for more girls?
Destiny: No. That just means we're going girl shopping.
Laura: Yeah! Girl shopping!
Evan: We can go boy shopping. We go shopping for things like guns and weapons and saws!
